Summer 2024 Albums (So Far)

As we near the end of Summer 2024, let’s recap and discuss some of the most influential alternative albums released. New albums continue to push the boundaries for the genre blending classic alternative sounds with newer and experimental synth-driven sounds. Both new and old artists continue to explore new sounds while staying true to their unique artistry marks. Let’s dive into some albums.

LOOM- Imagine Dragons

LOOM, Imagine Dragon’s sixth studio album, was released under Interscope Records on June 28 kicking off the summer album release season. The album has 10 tracks: “Wake Up,” “Nice to Meet You,” “Eyes Closed,” “Take Me to the Beach,” “In Your Corner,” “Gods Don’t Pray,” “Don’t Forget Me,” “Kid,” “Fire in These Hills,” and “Eyes Closed” with J Balvin. Sonically the album blends their signature pop-rock style and elements of rap and electro.

Big Ideas- Remi Wolf

Big Ideas was released under Island Records on July 12 marking Remi Wolf’s second studio album release. The album has 13 tracks: “Cinderella,” “Soup,” “Motorcycle,” “Toro,” “Alone in Miami,” “Cherries & Cream,” “Kangaroo,” “Pitiful,” “Wave,” “When I Thought Of You,” “Frog Rock,” “Just the Start,” and a bonus track. Wolf highlights more sophisticated songwriting while still leaning into the occasional funny line through indie, disco, electro, and jazz sounds.

Charm- Clairo

Clairo’s third studio album, Charm, was released on July 12 under Virgin Music Group. Charm has 11 tracks: “Nomad,” “Sexy to Someone,” “Second Nature,” “Slow Dance,” “Thank You,” “Terrapin,” “Juna,” “Add Up My Love,” “Echo,” “Glory of the Snow,” and “Pier 4.” The album explores the theme of being charmed by someone, similarly to the same feelings of having a crush while simultaneously exploring new sounds different from her previous albums.

No Name- Jack White

On August 2, Jack White released his sixth studio album, No Name, under his own Third Man Records. No Name has 13 tracks: “Old Scratch Blues,” “Bless Yourself,” “That’s How I’m Feeling,” “It’s Rough On Rats (If You’re Asking),” “Archbishop Harold Holmes,” “Bombing Out,” “What’s The Rumpus?” “Tonight (Was A Long Time Ago),” “Underground,” “Number One With A Bullet,” “Morning At Midnight,” “Missionary,” and “Terminal Archenemy Endling.” Every song features a distinctive electric guitar hook with strong rock roots.

Aghori Mhori Mei- The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins released their studio album, Aghori Mhori Mei, on August 2 under Martha’s Music. The album has 10 tracks: “Edin,” “Pentagrams,” “Sighommi,” “Pentecost,” “War Dreams Of Itself,” “Who Goes There,” “999,” “Goeth The Fall, “Sicarus,” and “Murnau.” The album leans into a dark sound with haunting melodies and gothic rock.

This Is How Tomorrow Moves- beabadoobee

beabadoobee released her third studio album, this is how tomorrow moves, under Dirty Hit on August 9. This Is How Tomorrow Moves has 14 tracks: “Take A Bite,” “California,” “One Time,” “Real Man,” “Tie My Shoes,” “Girl Song,” “Coming Home,” “Ever Seen,” “A Cruel Affair,” “Post,” “Beaches,” “Everything I Want,” “The Man Who Left Too Soon,” and “This Is How It Went.” The album expresses a reflection of beabadoobee’s mind and what she was going at the time with her classic alt-pop sound as well as indie-folk and the occasional piano ballad.
