Claud – Toast

Listening to Toast for the first time immediately sent me into an upward spiral of nostalgia and reminiscence. In the opening notes of “Onetwothree”, the cloudlike melody grounds you into what the rest of the album is going to be like. In “Scarlett”, a bubbly love song, Claud sings, “We did everything together, now we’ll never.” When you get to the bridge about halfway into the song you won’t be able to help from singing along. This song in particular drives home the melancholy vibe the album gives off. After the first two songs in this album, you’re left with your insecurities. You are left vulnerable to the lyrics as they continue to dissect you. One can nearly feel the sugarcoated tang of sorrowful memories on the tip of their tongue with every beat of this album.

Near the end you can find, “Sleep Song.” This sweet melody is the reminder that even when you fall apart, you will come back together again. It is no exception to the dreamy homesick feel of the rest of the album, but its helplessness stands out. “Sleep Song” is probably my favorite song on this album for one reason. It is a reminder to you. It tells you that even when you are so broken and so torn apart, you will be whole again. Toast has a certain way of ripping apart every single piece of you and slowing sewing you back together again. At the end, however, after all the stitches, you are left with so much more than you started with.

Claud -- Toast Track List:
  1. Onetwothree
  2. Scarlett
  3. Up At Night
  4. Sleep Song
  5. Giving In

Arlie – Wait EP

Arlie is a new alternative/indie band consisting of four boys from Nashville, Tennessee. The band’s first single “Big Fat Mouth” was released on February 23, 2017 through Intermission Records. Arlie has an upbeat and fun sound that has its own unique spin on the alternative/indie genre. Although the band is new with little music, I can guarantee that they will become really popular in the months to come.

Arlie has one album consisting of six songs, and its seriously incredible. It was really hard for me to pick a favorite song from this amazing album, but it has to be “Water Damage”. Just the intro of this song alone is fantastic and it the song just keeps getting better and better the more you listen to it. It has a mix of an upbeat, yet also relaxing sound, with an amazing beat. One Republic – Oh My My

One Republic was formed by lead vocalist, Ryan Tedder in 2002 after achieving commercial success on MySpace as an unsigned act. The band has a unique sound that features pop, rock, and our favorite, alternative. The group first released their debut album Dreaming Out Loud on November 20, 2007, and the song “Apologize” from the album was then remixed by Timbaland, making it an international success. After “Apologize” everyone loved One Republic, and was stoked when their next album Waking Up was released on November 17, 2009. The music just kept getting better and better with their next album Native, and a couple of incredible singles sprinkled in throughout, leading up to their most recent album released in 2016 entitled Oh My My.

Every single song that One Republic has released, I love. When Native was released I instantly bought the whole album and listened to the entire thing on repeat for months. Even to this day I love jamming out to Native. Even though Native was truly its own masterpiece, Oh My My is truly an album that I will always love listening to. I can honestly say that I adore every song on this album, but “Let’s Hurt Tonight” has to be my favorite. The song starts any you’re immediately intrigued with Ryan Tedder’s soothing vocals and the amazing instrumentals. “Let’s Hurt Tonight” really takes you on a journey with its powerful lyrics and soulful sound and you become obsessed with the song.

Typically, I only talk about my favorite song, but I absolutely must give “NbHD” an honorable mention. “Let’s Hurt Tonight” is more of an emotional song, but “NbHD” is a true car bop. This song is definitely one of the more alternative songs on the album, and I’m 100% addicted to it. The moment the song starts you’re hooked, and then it just gets better and better. I seriously cannot recommend this song enough, it’s truly a musical masterpiece. Oh My My is an album that has a sound for anyone, and any mood. This is one of the best albums I’ve ever listened to, and I 10/10 recommend you listen to it too.

lovelytheband – Finding It Hard to Smile

lovelytheband was formed by Mitchy Collins, Jordan Greenwald, and Sam Price when the musical trio met at a nightclub in West Hollywood in 2017. They then started creating music and released their first single “Broken” in April 2017. The single was so well received that it almost instantly received 3 million streams on Spotify and ended up hitting #14 on the Billboard Radio Songs chart on October 6, 2018. It was in September 2017 when the band released their first EP Everything I Could Never Say. Their single These Are My Friends was released in May 2018, with their first full album Finding It Hard to Smile being released a few months later in August 2018.

Finding It Hard to Smile is full of jams, but my favorite would have to be either “Make Believe” or “Broken”. Everyone knows how awesome “Broken” is, but “Stupid Mistakes” is also a truly incredible song. It’s a song that you really get into and can bop along to in the car. Lewis Del Mar – Lewis Del Mar

Lewis Del Mar’s album entitled, Lewis Del Mar, was released on October 7, 2016. This was the group’s first full album, following a few of their singles. Lewis Del Mar first released their four-song album in January 2016. The mini-album contained the songs “Loud(y)”, “Malt Liquor”, “Wave(s)”, and “Memories”, all of which were loved by audiences. In July of 2016, two singles were released, entitled “Painting (Masterpiece)”, and “14 Faces”, giving listeners a preview of the amazing album that was to come. In October 2016, the long awaited album was finally released, and it was completely worth the wait. Everyone loved the bands fresh, new, and exciting alternative sound, that we all instantly fell in love with

There is only about four albums where I love every song, and this is one of them. My favorite has to be “Malt Liquor”, due to its intriguing and addicting sound. The song starts off chill, and at a slower beat, which picks up in the chorus with a highly upbeat and impressive sound. Not only are the vocals amazing, the instrumental is also incredible in every single song. Lewis Del Mar has many different styles and sounds, which I believe has a song for everyone. Although this album is almost two years old, the music is right here in the now, and waiting to be listened to, and fallen in love with, and I can guarantee that you will fall in love. If you’re looking for a new album to become obsessed with, Lewis Del Mar is definitely the one for you.

Matt Maeson – The Hearse

Matt Maeson’s latest album The Hearse was released on April 27, 2018, just over a year after his first album Who Killed Matt Maeson was released. Matt Maeson’s first album was amazing, so it was no surprise when The Hearse came out as a total jam. His sound is very upbeat and brings a new and wanted sound to the alternative genre. When the single “Hallucinogenics” was released from the album in late March, it was determined that the new album would be incredible and follow with much success and praise.

My favorite song would definitely have to be “Hallucinogenics,” with “Unconditional” coming in at a close second. “Hallucinogenics” starts with a chill and nostalgic sound, which becomes more and more upbeat as you get to the pre chorus and once you reach the chorus you are completely hooked and the song is your new favorite jam. “Unconditional” begins with a nice smooth guitar sound that escalates into Maeson’s amazing high notes, getting you hooked instantly. The Hearse is a fantastic album if you’re looking for new songs that are total bops, have meaningful lyrics, and tell a story at the same time. Just beware that once you start listening to Matt Maeson, you may never stop.

Matt Maeson --The Hearse Track List:
  1. Put it on Me
  2. Hallucinogenics

The Happy Fits – Concentrate

Continuing with a fruit theme, The Happy Fits have done it again! Concentrate their debut album comes after their first ep called Awfully Apeelin, which deputed in 2016. The singles “Achey Bones,” “Grow Back,” and “Best Tears” from the album were released to pave the way. The Happy Fits are a relatively new alternative band that began in 2014 with a conversation about YouTube cover bands. The band uses according to their website “rocking guitars and electric cello” to create a catchy and unique sound.

Personally ever since I heard songs from Awfully Apeelin playing around the radio station, I probably haven’t gone a day without listening to the fun, energetic sounds of the Happy Fits. I recommend listening to the entirety of Concentrate. Each song has a different mood with the same instruments used in many different ways to create many different vibes. The song that has me hooked to the album is “So Alright, Cool, Whatever.” If you’re in the mood for something acoustic, there are a few songs for you. If you’re in the mood for something with strong, rock power chords, there are a few songs for you. If you’re in any mood, Concentrate is for you.

The Happy Fits-- Concentrate Track List:
  1. Achey Bones
  2. Best Tears
  3. So Alright, Cool, Whatever
  4. Hungry People

Catfish and the Bottlemen – The Balcony

Released on September 15, 2014 in the United Kingdom, Catfish and the Bottlemen introduced themselves to the world with their debut studio album The Balcony. Of course they had promotional singles, but it wasn’t until the United States release in January 2015 till they began to pick up some recognition for the album. The album was nominated for the Welsh Music Prize 2014-15 and as of April 2016 has sold 37,000 copies.

The first song that introduced me to the album was probably “Kathleen,” but soon the hits began to find me like “Cocoon” and “Homesick.” I had not listened to the full album until writing this music blog, which I was really missing out. The songs do not sound all the same, but they all include a similar structure and, obviously, the same instruments. After hearing the rest of the album, my highest recommendations are “26” and “Hourglass.” The whole album is perfect for relaxing with something mostly upbeat with some slower songs sprinkled in.

Catfish and the Bottlemen - The Balcony Track List:
  1. Homesick
  2. Kathleen
  3. Cocoon
  4. Fallout
  5. Pacifier

COIN – How Will You Know If You Never Try

COIN’s second album How Will You Know If You Never Try was released about two years after the release of their first single “Talk Too Much.” After COIN finished their 2015 album’s tour in May 2016, they came out with the instant hit “Talk Too Much.” Along with “I Don’t Wanna Dance” and “Malibu 1992,” the singles paved the way for the well awaited release of the album.

There is no way that any regular mall goer has not heard the song “Talk Too Much.” The song is such a hit that it over shadows the whole album, which is a shame. The entirety of the album has a varying dynamic sound that is hard to find in most albums. The album’s indie pop and pop rock vibe is fun to listen to while driving or just chilling with your friends. After discovering the album, I instantly latched on to “Malibu 1992.” You can find this album on Spotify or Apple Music.

COIN- How Will You Know If You Never Try Track List:
  1. Don't Cry, 2020

Fall Out Boy – Mania

Fall Out Boy’s latest album Mania was released on January 19, 2018 as a follow up to American Beauty/American Psycho. Mania ended up landing as number one on the US Billboard 200. Fall Out Boy made Mania to continue the pop rock sound from the commercial success of American Beauty/American Psycho. The singles “Champion” and “Young and Menace” paved the way for the release.

While reading up on facts about this album, I found it interesting that Patrick Stump, the lead singer, pushed back the release of the album because he felt it wasn’t ready and was rushed. We are all glad they waited because the released version of Mania is on point. My favorite song of the album would have to be “Wilson (Expensive Mistakes).” It is one of those songs that sounds modern while incorporating old Fall Out Boy.

Fall Out Boy - Mania Track List:
  1. Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea
  2. The Last Of The Real Ones
  3. HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T
  4. Wilson (Expensive Mistakes)

BØRNS- Blue Madonna

Released on January 12, 2018, Blue Madonna is the second popular album from BØRNS. The first single to promote the album was “Faded Heart,” released July 28, 2017. He announced the album via Instagram on December 4, 2017 with a pre-order for the vinyl for which only 1,500 copies were available. The album includes only one collaborative artist Lana Del Rey for the song “God Save Our Young Blood.”

Before reviewing this album, I had not listened to the full album, so my favorites from Blue Madonna are the popular singles. “Faded Heart” is already, in my opinion, an instant classic. ”Faded Heart” does not get old no matter how many times you listen to it. The music video for it also includes the iconic 70s style suit from the album cover. “God Save Our Young Blood” has Lana Del Rey and Garrett Borns amazing vocals harmonizing perfectly. After listening to the rest of the album, I found a few hidden gems. “Second Night of Summer” and “We Don’t Care” are my recommendations for a fresh, alternative sound. You can buy the album on iTunes or listen on Spotify.

BØRNS- Blue Madonna Track List:
  1. "God Save Our Young Blood" (with Lana Del Rey)

Vance Joy - Nation of Two

Vance Joy came out with a brand new album to end February 2018 right. In November, the Australian singer-songwriter announced Nation of Two and described it as a “perfectly self-contained couple…” The lead single “Lay It on Me” released in July 2017 was #18 on the Australian Singles Chart and has been certified platinum. Some of the rest of the album slowly found its way out before the full release on February 23, 2018.

While listening to this album, I received very indie folk vibes, which is to expect from Vance Joy. Usually any Vance Joy song is the perfect music to fall asleep to or to chill with friends. Listening to this album was almost like listening to the story. If I were to recommend a song that isn’t one of the popular singles, I would have to say “Bonnie & Clyde.”

Vance Joy - Nation of Two Track List:
  1. "Call If You Need Me"
  2. "Lay It on Me"
  3. "We're Going Home"
  4. "Saturday Sun"

Watsky- x Infinity

The forth studio album from Watsky x Infinity was released on August 19, 2016. The spoken word artist, rapper, and author George Watsky recorded this album at Seahorse Studios in Los Angeles, Grand St. Recording in Brooklyn, and Aqua Vibea in Hadley, Massachusetts. X Infinity, pronounced Times Infinity, had many collaborators including Josh Dun (Twenty One Pilots), Julia Nunes, and Danny McClain. Each song on the album almost has its own style and sound.

When reviewing this album, I find relaxed songs and pure alternative music, but some of the songs are very hip-hop influenced. If you were looking for an album where every song sounds almost the same, this would not be the album for you. Every song is almost its own story with either a heavy hip-hop drive or piano instrumental music. My song recommendations for someone looking for the alternative sound would be “Yes Britannia,” “Stick to Your Guns,” and “Chemical Angel.” For those wanting the alt. hip-hop vibe, go for “Pink Lemonade,” “Little Slice,” and “Don’t Be Nice.” Personally, I enjoy the bottom half of the album from the piano music. If listening on Spotify, a bonus hip-hop track called “Exquisite Corpse” resides at the end.

Watsky- x Infinity Track List:
  1. "Tiny Glowing Screens, Pt. 3"
  2. "Talking To Myself"
  3. "Chemical Angel"
  4. "Little Slice"
  5. "Springtime in New York"
  6. "Pink Lemonade"
  7. "Don't Be Nice"
  8. "Yes Britannia"
  9. "Love Letters"

  13. "Midnight Heart"

AJR- The Click

The second studio album from AJR The Click was released on June 9, 2017. This Indie Pop and Electropop album was another self-produced album by the band. The Click was created from the songs off the EP What Everyone’s Thinking and a few other singles. In 2015, “Call My Dad” the first promotional single was released. The third promotional and most popular single “Weak” came out in October of 2016.

The song “Weak” was my first glimpse into The Click. Its meaningful lyrics and upbeat alternative sound had me hooked. It was not until the popularity of “Sober Up” until I discovered the full album. The entire album is worth a listen, but some specific songs that should be looked into are “The Good Part,” “Drama,” and “I’m Not Famous.” I recommend listening in order for the full effect given by the first song “Overture.”

AJR - The Click Track List
  1. “Overture”
  2. “The Good Part”
  3. “Weak”
  4. “Sober Up”
  5. “Drama”

Hellogoodbye - Would it Kill You?

Hellogoodbye’s sophomore record from 2010 is an indie rock adventure full of fantastic layering and catchy melodies, as well as plenty of variety to allow the record to continue feeling unique and exciting throughout. Panic! At the Disco – Death of a Bachelor

Panic! At the Disco’s full-length record from 2016 is an alternative-centered album that manages to fantastically blend various different genres, such as pop, rock, and even jazz into its eleven track runtime in order to hold interest the entire way through the record.

Although a bit of a departure from the band’s widely recognized sound, the most impressive aspect of the record is the fact that not only is lead singer Brendan Urie the single remaining member here, but that Urie also played most of the instruments, wrote all of the songs, and co-produced the record, in addition to providing the vocals.

Some of my favorite tracks worth checking out on Death of a Bachelor include the songs, “Golden Days,” “Death of a Bachelor,” and “House of Memories.” You can purchase Panic! At the Disco’s Death of a Bachelor on iTunes and Amazon, as well as listen to the record on their Spotify account.

The Beach Boys’ fifth full-length record from 1964 is an album full of summer vibes, romantic lyrics, as well as wonderful harmonies that are sure to get stuck in a person’s head no matter what time of year it is. The Beatles – Rubber Soul (US Release)

The Beatles’ sixth full-length record from 1965 is a folk-rock record that showcases both the band’s stellar songwriting skills and topnotch production quality to the highest degree. Two versions of the record exist due to The Beatles having two different labels for distribution in both the UK and the US; however, I personally prefer the North American release due to the overall consistency in sound. This particular release of Rubber Soul reached all the way to number 1 on the U.S. Billboard charts for six total weeks.

Although I wholeheartedly recommend listening to Rubber Soul the entire way through since it is my personal favorite Beatles record, some of my favorite tracks worth checking out on Rubber Soul include the songs, “I’ve Just Seen a Face,” “In My Life,” and “I’m Looking Through You.”

You can purchase the US version of The Beatles’ Rubber Soul on Amazon, as well as listen to entire the record on YouTube. Of course, if you want to truly have a blast from the past experience, you can also seek out the original vinyl record to play on your turntable like I have as well.

  2. "Faded Heart"

  3. “Weak”
  4. “Sober Up”
  5. “Drama”

The Beatles – Rubber Soul (US Release)

The Beatles’ sixth full-length record from 1965 is a folk-rock record that showcases both the band’s stellar songwriting skills and topnotch production quality to the highest degree.
